Christmas in Mauritius
Experience an Unforgettable Christmas in Mauritius
Christmas in the tropics? Think exotic flair, the scent of ripe pineapples, and not a down jacket in sight. Leave the winter coats behind and dive into the heart of festive family celebrations in Mauritius—right in the middle of summer.
Celebrating Christmas in Mauritius
Mauritian summer bursts with vibrant colors, the heady perfume of plump mangoes, and Scarlet flamboyant petals raining down on the roads. Just like elsewhere in the world, Christmas has become a joyful, secular celebration shared by everyone, regardless of religion.
Whether you're on holiday or enjoying a longer stay in one of our luxury residences, embrace the unique festive spirit that fills the island at this special time of year.

Finding a Christmas Tree in Mauritius
In true tropical style, the traditional pine tree is replaced by the Casuarina gold Filao. Though less busy, these trees proudly stand in many local homes. You'll find them for sale near supermarkets, petrol stations, and roadside vendors in towns and villages. While grown specifically for this purpose by the Forest Service, most end up as bulky waste.
Eco-conscious? Choose a potted tree from a local nursery—or better yet, decorate one of the trees in your private garden.
At our Resorts, we proudly replant the Christmas trees that adorn our Conciergeries each year.
Shopping for Gifts
Thinking of doing your Christmas shopping in Mauritius? Great idea! While major shopping malls tend to get overcrowded in December, head out to explore the unique atmosphere in the island's busy towns: browse the lively street stalls in Port Louis, or explore the shopping arcades of Curepipe, Rose-Hill or Quatre-Bornes, where you'll find bustling crowds and festive cheer.
Expect a mix of imported goods (mostly from China) and locally made textiles, Christmas decorations and trinkets. And yes—bargaining is part of the experience!
Looking for meaningful, handmade gifts? We encourage supporting local artisans. Read our dedicated article on gifts to bring back from Mauritius, or explore nearby craft markets (such as the École du Nord if you're staying at Mythic Suites & Villas, or Vanilla Village and École Paul et Virginie near Marguery Villas). Ask our concierges for dates and directions. You'll find lovely objects, jewellery, home decor, home decor, treats—plenty to fill the slippers under the tree.

Celebrating Christmas in Mauritius means experiencing the magic of the holidays under the sun: a turquoise lagoon, gourmet moments and human warmth as the best gift. This period is very coveted, book now to enjoy an unforgettable experience.
Order Your Holiday Feast
Christmas in Mauritius is traditionally a time for family, but many choose to celebrate outdoors. It's common to see local families setting up tents on the beach, enjoying festive meals under the sun. Bougainvillaea and bright red hibiscus flowers add a tropical touch to the table decor.
Given the warm weather, meals are typically light. Grilled seafood, quality meats, sausages, sausages, chicken or prawns are often featured. You can also find premium imported products in local supermarkets and gourmet stores.
And for dessert? Many talented local artisans craft exquisite Christmas logs. Our top pick: L'Épicerie Gourmande in Tamarin and Grand Baie for its decadent creations using seasonal fruits.
A Mauritian table wouldn't be complete without the stars of summer: juicy bunches of lychees, mangoes, and longans bring the perfect sweet finish.

Traditionalists: Attend Midnight Mass
The Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve remains a cherished tradition for local Catholic families. On December 24th, churches welcome congregants for a special Christmas vigil. You're welcome to attend mass at one of the charming stone churches near our resorts—La Salette (near Mythic Suites & Villas), or Saint-Augustin And Saint-Benoît in the Tamarin region. Our janitors will be happy to provide mass schedules.
Christmas in Mauritius is a promise of enchanting — a vibrant, heartfelt, and joyful escape.
Celebrate in the gentle warmth of the southern summer and create unforgettable memories of laughter, togetherness, and island magic.
