The stories surrounding his birth are numerous, always full of tenderness and symbolism. The most famous tells how Parvati (one of Hinduism’s goddesses) created him by hand, and how, due to a divine misunderstanding, Shiva replaced his head with that of a powerful elephant.
Ganesh is also the god of benevolent mischief. One story recounts a race around the world: while his elder brother Kartikeya circles the Earth, Ganesh simply circles his parents, declaring that they represent the entirety of the cosmos.
